After sifting through hundreds of Android and iPhone apps, I have narrowed down the 10 most useful, most fun, and the overall best Android and iPhone apps of 2014.

Recently I was given the job of researching and writing about the top 111 apps. As a smartphone user, I found many of these apps useful, enjoyable and otherwise beneficial, and downloaded several of them for my own daily use. 111 apps, by my account, is quite a large number to sort through and as such, I’d like to present my top 10 Android and iPhone apps. Enjoy!

My 10 Favorite Android and iPhone Apps:

10) Brewster

It’s an extremely simple concept but it works. Brewster is basically your guarantor that you won’t have to spend hours recovering and copying contacts from one device to another. This app uploads all of your contacts from all of your different accounts (E-mail, Facebook, cell phone and more) and then syncs them to all of your devices. It’s headache prevention in an app.

9) QuizUp

Over the course of many conversations, school courses and internet surfing sessions, I’ve developed quite a collection of random knowledge. Never (aside from that one time that I had a teacher who asked random questions for extra credit) has my fact-base been as useful as when QuizUp went viral. QuizUp is an addictive trivia game that pits you against friends or strangers to see who knows more about any given topic imaginable. QuizUp is fun and there are so many categories to choose from so you may never get bored.

8) Just Landed

My family does its fair share of traveling and I’m the youngest child, so whenever anyone needs to be picked up at the airport, I’m usually the one who gets the job. The problem is, airport trackers are often unreliable and I often end up waiting for a couple of boring hours at the airport for my passenger to disembark and collect his/her luggage. Just Landed does one simple but useful task and it does it flawlessly. Using your phone GPS and frequently updated flight-information, Just Landed is able to tell you exactly when to leave your house so that no one has to wait impatiently at the airport.

7) Shazam

It’s happened to me so many times but thankfully, it won’t happen any longer. Hearing a song and wanting to download it, but not knowing what it’s called or who the band is, is extremely frustrating. Shazam is a great app that is able to identify any song (or TV Show) by just listening to it for a few seconds. And, as if that isn’t great enough, Shazam also presents you with the lyrics, similar tracks and concert times right there on your phone.

6) iTranslate Voice

Languages have never been a strength of mine, so despite the fact that I took a year of Spanish in high school and several years of Hebrew throughout my educational career, I can’t say much more than “My name is Dov” in these foreign languages. iTranslate Voice is the best app for solving my uni-lingual dilemmas. I simply speak into my phone and iTranslate Voice vocally translates what I want to say. I can then pass the phone to the person I’m speaking to and let them do the same. It may be awkward for conversations but it’s perfect for asking directions or other meaningful questions.

5) Stock Touch

My friends and I enjoy testing the market and investing, and Stock Touch is an amazing app that’s made researching and picking great stocks much easier. The interface is beautiful and Stock Touch can be changed and manipulated to indicate which stocks are hot, which industries are rising and more. Stock Touch also enables investors to zoom into the past and see how stocks have been performing over the course of the past 5 years in one easy-on-the-eyes graphic design.

4) Magisto

I like to consider myself somewhat electronics-savvy, but there are few things that I enjoy less than having to drone in front of my computer, splicing out split seconds of footage to make videos that are teeming with mediocrity (maybe I’m not that bad, but I’m not great either.) Magisto is one-click video editing. You simply choose the pictures and videos that you want to include, pick a soundtrack, write a creative title and Magisto takes care of the rest. I’m sure you’ll enjoy creating and watching quality productions without putting in the hours of effort.

3) Waze

In a sentence, Waze is the best tool for getting around while driving. Using peer-collected updates, Waze alerts you to traffic, gas, police cars and other important information, and then directs you in your ideal route. It’s simple to use, friendly and solves the problem of deciding which of the dozens of GPS apps to use. Just use Waze.

2) One Second Everyday

It’s a concept that really speaks to me. Everyday should be significant. Everyday one should improve his/herself, the people around him/her and the world as a whole. One Second Everyday is an amazing app that helps you capture these short, special moments. After you’ve done so, One Second Everyday ties them together so you can re-watch years of your life in just minutes. Reflection can be a powerful thing.

1) Snapchat

In my humble opinion this is the number one app out there today. Snapchat lets you send pictures, videos and texts to your friends that delete in a short period of time. Although it may not seem to practical at first, once you and your friends sign up, you’ll see what all the fuss is about. Snapchat is great for sending hilarious pictures or your location and is also fantastic for just dropping by with a quick hello. Recently added video-chat, and picture filtering features only enhance the experience and I’m sure there is more innovation to come.

A Little Bit About Me

Between sports and music, girls and grades I guess you can say that I’m a typical teenager (20 years old to be precise, but I still feel the same as I did last month.) Like my 20 year old counterparts, when this past school year was reaching its conclusion, I began thinking about my summer plans.
