A major downside of the digital age is the fact that we spend way too much time both indoors and outdoors staring at screens of various sizes. While it can be easy to get in the habit of lying down and watching TV from your laptop, new technology can also be used — believe it or not — to get healthier.
It may seem like the human race is on pace to become more and more out of shape, but in reality its never been easier to have limitless health and fitness tips, instructional videos and exercise tools at your fingertips. Mobile apps like Nike Plus map the course of your outdoor runs and give you motivation along the way. There are tons of workout videos hosted on streaming sites like YouTube. Great health and fitness sites are all over the Internet if you know where to find them.
Its Your Call!
Getting in shape means staying disciplined. That can be as easy as eating a healthy breakfast in the morning and as difficult as finding the time to do your daily workout routine, but consistency is key.
Unfortunately, if you have trouble staying on task in real life, you probably struggle with staying focused online. The web is filled with constant distractions — it can be easy to fall down a Facebook or Wikipedia rabbit hole even if you really only got on the computer to look up a healthy recipe.
Wibki helps keep things in order. I recently added a Health and Fitness group to my Wibki home page, and I’m hoping that it’s going to help me keep track of the many sites that offer tips and guidance for leading a healthier life. Below are some of the top sites you should add to your own Wibki Health/Fitness group.
Let’s Get Healthy!
Fitocracy turns your personal fitness into a game, but it really does give serious results. The site was created by video game lovers who understand that getting to the gym or outdoors and exercising is more important than sitting inside and leveling up a fictional character. Improving your own body is ultimately more rewarding, but it can still be a game, too. That’s the motivation behind using Fitocracy, which can be rewarding if you put in the effort. The site helps you track your personal progress while completing fitness challenges in order to unlock achievements. The site also has an active, encouraging community of members.
Wello connects you with a personal trainer to conduct a live workout session via 2-way video from anywhere in the world. The site is further proof that simply having a laptop and a little bit of space gives you access to a world of workout training that in the past only existed at pricey gyms. The site has classes in yoga, pilates, body building, sports performance, aerobics and martial arts, among others. Prices vary depending on your membership plan, but can be as cheap as $7 per class with a group or up to $25 individually. There are tons of options for those of all skill levels. Definitely a cool site.
Strava is an extremely enhanced version of the Nike Plus app I mentioned earlier. It’s an app that tracks your bike rides or runs via a GPS device, but it also integrates with strava.com to allow you to view and analyze your data via your browser. The site’s data visualization allows you to better understand how each of your performances stacks against the others, encouraging your improvement in every trip. Like Fitocracy, Strava has a supportive community of members, all of whom are trying to get in better shape and constantly improve.
After discovering Neila Rey’s website, she quickly became my favorite fitness instructor. She’s the open source alternative to fitness instructor megastars that still offer their instructional videos on pricey DVDs. Neila Rey’s website is filled with tons of helpful fitness tips as well as specific workout routines, programs, and challenges. All of Rey’s advice can be viewed for free, and all of the workouts can be done on your own. This truly democratizes the process of getting fit, and Neila Rey’s site is definitely worth checking out for beginners of any workout regiment.
Headspace is attempting to integrate meditation into modern life by encouraging people to take 10 minutes out of each day to use their meditation technique. The site comes with a guide that teaches you how to meditate, claiming that after the 10 day program your brain will be changed for the better. There’s certainly scientific evidence that meditation is great for your overall health, but the £3.74/month price tag on Headspace might turn some curious individuals away. There are plenty of ways to get started without paying anything, but Headspace does offer great tips (and it has newly-updated content on a regular basis), so it might be worth the cost.
Mind Body Green is a lifestyle and wellness site that covers those three things: the mind, the body, and all things green. The “green” section of the site includes stories about the environment, nature, beauty and herbs. The body section includes fitness and nutrition tips, while the Mind section has articles about happiness, meditation and spirituality. The majority of the stories hosted on MindBodyGreen have a positive tilt, and it’s nice to read happy and helpful articles online while you work towards improving your overall fitness and health.
Patients Like Me is an important tool for anyone undergoing treatment for any sort of health issue. The site connects people who are undergoing similar treatment in order to provide an online support group. The site is useful for patients to compare medications and treatments, share stories about their progress and words of encouragement for each other. It can be tough for individuals to seek treatment individually and PatientsLikeMe offers the unique service of connecting everyone to improve health care together.
Better Doctor allows you to exactly what it sounds like: find a better doctor near you. The site searches through over a million doctors of various specialities, allowing you to sort by location, reviews, licensure and education. The site is essentially a RateMyProfessors for doctors, but it provides an arguably more valuable service. Choosing a doctor is important, and Better Doctor makes the process easier and more transparent.
